Okay, I’ll admit it. When one of our Millennial sons stops by for a visit, I’ll sometimes enlist their help to solve a tech challenge. And yes, as I watch their fingers fly across the keyboard, I’m amazed.
Humility aside, on a scale from 1-to-10, I’d rate myself a solid 7 when it comes to learning and deploying new technologies. I’m a McGyver-type, who can usually figure my way through most things.
Technology has been a tremendous catalyst for automation and scale in every business I’ve launched.
While you might choose to outsource tech needs, which could be a smart choice, getting a handle on how technology can be harnessed to accelerate and improve business performance is crucial.
As you map out your plan, here are a few tech essentials to consider:
You’ll need some kind of digital presence (LinkedIn and Facebook won’t be enough). Some can get by with a no-frills website, especially if what they do needs no explanation. But if your field is complex OR flooded with competitors, you’ll advance faster with a more robust website framework.
While I’ve seen some freelancers get by with Gmail, I prefer an email address that links to my website for more marketing/branding juice. You’ll also need to think about how you’ll manage incoming emails and schedules.
Operations & Financials
If you’re working with a handful of clients, you might go lean on business systems, but if transaction volume is heavy, something stronger may be in order. File sharing tools, like Dropbox, are also helpful these days. We’ll help you think through decision criteria to make sure the choice you make is a fit.
We’ll often recommend that freelancers take on this social media beast one bite at a time. Listen and share on one channel until you master it. Then tackle another and so on. Social posting tools like Buffer and Hootsuite can help you boost your reach and save time.
